A conference badge bearing Hongda Zhao’s name is held up in front of the Nagoya University entrance sign beneath a clear blue sky. Six attendees pose together at an evening reception during the evolution meeting in Nagoya.

Because of an unexpected situation affecting my professor, I stepped in at short notice and travelled to Nagoya to give this presentation. It was my first time attending the annual meeting of the Society for Evolutionary Studies, Japan. At the meeting, I met many professors and researchers with whom I had previously exchanged ideas, and heard many interesting studies in evolutionary biology.
